Edema
In summer, we drink a lot of water without sweating in an airconditioned room so that excess water is easily accumulated in the body, but we have to be careful about edema that could be a sign of serious diseases. Edema is the condition that when you press the skin with your finger, the water where is pressed is lost and a dimple is retained for about 10 seconds, while fat is the condition that the pressed area returns very quickly. Edema caused by normal excess water can be improved by sweating a lot by taking a relaxing bath or exercises. But if edema is not improved by sweating, there is a possibility of kidney diseases. When you have kidney diseases, water can be discharged from your body and is accumulated in your body, resulting in edema of the whole body. Dangerous edema Edema in the leg in the morning (Fig. 1) and edema in the face in the evening (Fig. 2) are dangerous. Edema in the leg in the evening is okay because water tends to be accumulate in the leg that is locate in the lower part of the body during the daytime. But if you have edema in the leg in the morning, it could be caused by kidney diseases because the leg is not located in the lower part of the body while sleeping. Excessive water retention could be caused by some problems in the kidney. On the contrary, edema in the face in the evening means that there is a possibility that water could be discharged sufficiently from the kidney as urine. 3rd : Chosen by 18 out of 100 Acupuncturists
Indications Low back pain, Knee pain, Cold intolerance, Edema and Menstrual cramps Acupuncture Point Spleen-6 (SP6) Location SP6 is located where the point 4 fingers above the inner side of the ankle bone meets the inside of the leg bone (Fig. 1). Pressing SP6 increases the blood flow around the pelvis, uterus and ovaries and regulates the balance of hormones, so it is effective for low back problems and gynecological problems. How to press SP6 (1) Press SP6 like putting your thumb into the inside of the bone for 3 seconds (Fig. 2). (2) Release your thumb for 3 seconds (Fig. 3). (3) Repeat (1) and (2) for 5 times. When the weather gets cold, people with frequent urination increase. But there are a lot of cases that heart diseases and blood vessel diseases are hidden behind frequent urination. So it is important to know the characteristics of your frequent urination.
Overactive bladder (OAB) Because the nerves of the bladder become sensitive, frequent, sudden urges to urinate are caused even if urine is not accumulated. The amount of urine at night is more than during daytime Overactive bladder is the disease that the amount of urine at night is less than during daytime. The diseases that the amount of urine at night is more than during daytime are heart diseases, sleep apnea syndrome, lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes and others. Hyperparathyroidism Hyperparathyroidism is a disorder of the four parathyroid glands caused by the development of a benign tumor or others. These glands are about the size of a grain of rice and are located in your neck. The parathyroid glands produce parathyroid hormone, which helps maintain an appropriate balance of calcium in the bloodstream and in tissues that depend on calcium for proper functioning. the development of a tumor causes excess secretion of parathyroid hormone, causing abnormal activity of organs in whole body. The kidney and muscles are easily affected by hyperparathyroidism. If the kidney which regulates the amount of urine is affected, urine is produced too much. If a pelvic floor muscle which supports the bladder is affected, frequent urination is caused by the decline of the function of the muscle. Even if the test results of creatinine, calcium and blood pressure are within the range, they are a little bit high. Swelling of legs and night urination Water coming from swelling of legs leads to night urination. People whose legs are obviously swollen have about 200-300 cc of water in one leg, more than 400 cc (2 glasses) of water for both legs. The accumulated water in the legs comes back to the blood stream when lying down at night and the amount of water in the blood increases. The body tries to produce more urine to discharge the excess water, causing night urination. Check the swelling of legs When you press the inside of the shin with your finger, if the finger print stays there or a dimple doesn’t disappear, you have swelling of the leg and tend to have night urination (Fig. 1). How to improve night urination by solving swelling of legs The method is soaking in a bath tub. The effect of water pressure and heat of warm water brings the water stored in the legs back to the blood. But it takes about 3-4 hours that the water returned to the blood becomes urine. So it is recommended to take a bath 4 hours before going to bed. If taking a bath 4 hours before going to bed is difficult, it is also recommended to massage legs, wear elastic stockings and lie down lifting legs up 4 hours before going to bed (Fig. 2). If your edema is hard and you don’t have any internal disease, there is a possibility of a generalized (both sides and all of the body) edema called idiopathic edema occurring from an unknown cause.
A typical edema usually occurs related to some abnormality of internal organs such as kidney, heart or liver, but this type of edema occurs without such abnormality. Idiopathic edema is a disease that the mesh between the blood vessels and the cells becomes larger, leading to the leakage of more fluid from the blood vessels to the cells. The characteristics of idiopathic edema are:
There is no specific medicine for idiopathic edema. It is important to reduce the stress you are holding. |
