[CASE] Dizziness (vertigo)
A woman in her 50s complained about dizziness which started 1 week ago at the night when she slipped down. When she turned her neck to her right, she felt vertigo. When she looked at her cell phone to text, she experienced the similar vertigo. She also complained that she had pain in the back of her neck on her right side. Another complaint was right hip joint pain.
After one acupuncture treatment, the dizziness disappeared.
I diagnosed her as Liver Deficiency and strengthened her left Liver-8 (located at the knee joint) with Yin technique. Then I taped (not inserted) needles at some points on her back and retained a needle at each Dizziness point on her ears and let her relaxed for 10 minutes. After that, I treated her back with Teishin (Non-insertion needle) and asked her to lie on her back again and burned moxa (heat therapy) at her right Liver-1 (located below the nail of her big toe) for 15 times. At the end of treatment, I attached a press ball (a small gold ball) on her left Dizziness point.
After the treatment, she told me that her vertigo was less. I recommended her to have another treatment soon, but she reported me that 2 days after the treatment, her vertigo was gone and she didn’t have another treatment.

Hunger Keeps You Young
An antiaging hormone called Ghrelin was discovered in 1999 in Japan and is effective to keep not only a youthful look but also youthful internal organs such as the heart, the blood vessel or the kidney.
What is aging?
Our body is formed of about 60 trillion cells. We can move our body and live every day with the energy each cell produces using oxygen delivered to them. But with aging, 60 trillion cells can’t use the oxygen efficiently and the energy produced by the cells decreases. That makes difficult to move the body. This is aging.
But if you can secrete antiaging hormone, ghrelin sufficiently, your 60 trillion cells can mass produce energy using oxygen.
When you are hungry, your stomach growls. This noise is caused by the function of ghrelin. Therefore, when your stomach is growling, a lot of ghrelin is secreted.
Ghrelin is a hormone which is secreted from the stomach when a person starts feeling hungry. When hunger reaches the peak, a lot of ghrelin is secreted and stimulates the stomach, making noise.
To secrete a lot of ghrelin, it is important to take meals when you are as hungry as your stomach growls.
The influence of ghrelin to aging was experimented.
When aging is progressed, the amount of waste matter in the cell increases.
Normal: 1-3 ng/ml
A 64 years old female who always feels tired: 7.53 ng/ml
This means that her cells’ aging is progressed.
Her usual dietary life was 3 meals and 2 snacks between breakfast and lunch and 2 snacks between lunch and dinner.
She stopped eating 4 snacks between meals for 2 days.
The first day she didn’t have growling noise but the amount of waste matter decreased to 4.43 ng/ml.
The second day she had growling noise before lunch and dinner and the amount of waste matter decreased to 2.93 ng/ml which is within normal range.

Rapid elevation of blood sugar caused by diabetes makes the body not function properly, leading to serious conditions such as dialysis due to a failure of the kidney, loss of vision, necrosis of the leg, etc. There are two major causes. Diabetes Type I is caused by heredity or virus infection. Diabetes Type II is caused by irregularity of dietary life or lifestyle habit. 95 % of diabetes are Type II and Type II can be prevented by the improvement of dietary life.
To prevent diabetes, lowering the blood sugar is important. The nutrition that lowers the blood sugar is lycopene. Lycopene is contained in tomato a lot. Tomato is often eaten raw, but to take lycopene effectively, it is better to make tomato juice. The cells containing lycopene in raw tomato is too hard to get lycopene out of the cells by biting. Blender breaks the cells of tomato, increasing lycopene coming out of the cells. Tomato juice on the market is more effective than handmade one because lycopene is rich in the skin of tomato and tomato juice on the market uses tomato with thick skin. That makes the amount of lycopene in the tomato for tomato juice 3 times more than normal tomato.
It is recommended to drink a glass of tomato juice every day. In a research, drinking tomato juice for 1 year made the blood sugar lower down by 30 % (160 mg/dL becomes 110 mg/dL). This result is similar to the result brought by medication.
Adding olive oil into tomato juice is more effective because lycopene easily dissolves in oil and the absorption rate into the body becomes higher.
Warming tomato juice makes lycopene dissolve in oil more than 2 times and absorbed more easily. The absorption rate of lycopene when drinking hot tomato juice is about 4.5 times higher.
The recipe of hot tomato juice is only microwave a cup of tomato juice with a table spoon of olive oil.
It is more effective to drink hot tomato juice before breakfast because the absorption rate of lycopene is higher in the morning. If you drink it 30 minutes before breakfast, you can prevent rapid elevation of blood sugar.

High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure can be a cause of heart attack or heart failure. There are 2 major causes of high blood pressure.
First one is the amount of blood. Increase of blood in the blood vessel causes high blood pressure. The cause of increase of blood in the blood vessel is too much intake of salt. When you take too much salt, your body tries to reduce the concentration of salt in the blood by increasing water in the blood, leading in high blood pressure. In this case, reducing salt improves high blood pressure.
Second one is contraction of the blood vessel. When the blood vessel becomes small, the pressure in the blood vessel becomes higher. This is caused by negative lifestyle habit such as drinking too much alcohol, smoking or too much intake of salt.
Food to improve high blood pressure caused by the contraction of the blood vessel
This food is rich in polyphenol. Polyphenol produces nitrogen monoxide which softens the blood vessel, widening the blood vessel and lower the blood pressure. Even if people with normal blood pressure eat this food, their blood pressure doesn’t change. In a research, 350 people who was suffering from high blood pressure ate this food for 4 weeks and 90 % of them had improvement in their blood pressure.
The food is chocolate. Polyphenol contained in chocolate improves the contraction of the blood vessel. Other foods containing polyphenol are red wine, black tea, onions and apples.
Polyphenol content in 100 grams
Red wine: 180 mg
Black tea: 100 mg
Apple: 220 mg
Onion: 90 mg
Chocolate: 840 mg
Recommended amount of chocolate a day is 5 pieces (25 grams) (Fig. 1). You don’t need to eat bitter chocolate. According to the 4 weeks research, there was no change in their weight. 5 pieces of chocolate is about 150 kilocalories. High cacao content chocolate is recommended because they are rich in polyphenol.

Avocado is good for constipation because avocado not only contains a lot of dietary fibers but also oleic acid which activates the function of the intestines.
Pickled vegetables are good for constipation because they contain vegetable lactobacillus which easily reach the intestines alive.
Dietary fibers are very effective for constipation, but it is apt to be insufficient.
Lettuce: 1.1 grams (within 100 grams)
Burdock: 5.7 grams
Dried persimmon contains 14 grams of dietary fiber within 100 grams.
Eating dried persimmon with olive oil poured over is more effective because oleic acid in olive oil stimulates the intestines, promoting peristaltic movement (the contraction and relaxation of the muscles of the digestive tract to move the food through the digestive system) and olive oil makes stools soft when it is mixed with stools, leading to better bowel movement.
9 women of 40s-50s who had been suffering from constipation for years tried to eat dried persimmon with olive oil for a week. Before starting the trial, the number of their bowel movement had been about twice a week. 8 of 9 women got better bowel movement, having about 5 bowel movements for a week.
It is necessary to be careful about too much eating of dietary fiber because it sometimes worsens constipation. Eating 2 pieces of dried persimmon is effective to improve constipation.
Abdominal massage to remove gas (Fig. 1)
1. Lie on your right side.
2. Take a comfortable posture using your arm or pillow under your head.
3. Massage around your navel along the flow of the large intestine clockwise, breathing deeply.
4. 5 to 10 minutes a day

The major cause of heart diseases (heart attack: myocardial infarction, angina) is mushy blood. So prevent the blood from becoming mushy prevents heart diseases. When you have a blood test, if LDL cholesterol is higher than the guide line, there is a high possibility that your blood is mushy. The major causes of high LDL cholesterol are smoking, lack of exercise, stress and irregularity of dietary life. Especially dietary life is very important.
The food preventing heart diseases is canned mackerel in brine. EPA contained canned mackerel in brine makes the blood flow smooth. EPA is a required nutrition for our body, but our body can’t make it so we have to take EPA from foods. EPA required for a day is 1 gram and a canned mackerel in brine contains more than that.
It is good to cook a canned mackerel in brine with the following ingredients.
Daikon: pungent component of daikon called isothiocyanate improves the blood flow.
Onion: isoariin contained in onion improves the blood flow.
The following is a canned mackerel you can buy in Trader Joe's. it is not in brine but in sunflower oil.
Wild-caught off the coast of Tunisia, the Mackerel are skinned and boned by hand, then lightly salted and packed, two-to-three per tin (depending on the size of the fish), in sunflower oil. Mackerel are milder and larger than sardines, and rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (1100 mg DHA and 380 mg EPA Omega 3 fatty acids per serving). They're excellent in salads, on a mezze plate, and stupendous as a snack on crackers. Wild caught with NO synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, MSG, added trans fats or genetically modified ingredients.

Red wine, blue-skinned fish, curry and others are famous as food to prevent dementia.
The cause of dementia is something like flecks produced in the brain with aging, which is called amyloid beta. Especially the flecks produced in the seahorse of the brain lower the function of memory, leading to dementia.
The newest research found a food which suppresses the flecks in the brain. The food effective to prevent dementia is camembert cheese. Camembert cheese contains oleic acid amid and dehydroergosterol which suppress the increase of flecks in the brain (amyloid beta) because these two substances are produced during the process of the fermentation of camembert cheese by white mold.
Eating 1 to 2 pieces of camembert cheese a day is effective to prevent dementia. Drinking 3 to 4 glasses of red wine with camembert cheese is more effective. The rate of dementia development of the people who drink 3-4 glasses of red wine a day is one fifth of the people who don’t drink.
According to the research reported the last November, the bitterness of beer is effective to prevent dementia. The bitterness effective to prevent dementia is hop origin. A can of beer a day is good amount.

Boost Up Immune System
Komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) contains a lot of vitamin E and carotenoid which elevate the activity of immune cells. Vitamin E in Komatsuna is 9 times more than cabbage which is also said to boost up the immune system and carotenoid in Komatsuna is 60 times more than cabbage. Komatsuna also contains isothiocyanate a lot, which increases the number of immune cells.
Isothiocyanate is only found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, daikon or cauliflower.
Isothiocyanate is weak at heat so it is more effective to eat them raw. When the vegetable is cut into small pieces, more isothiocyanate is produced. So smoothie is recommended. Blend Komatsuna (50 grams), apple (a half) and water (100 cc) for 2 persons.
Another recommended recipe is pickled Komatsuna.
Mix Komatsuna (1 stem) with salt (appropriate amount), sugar (1 tea spoon), vinegar (1 tea spoon), kelp (appropriate amount) and red pepper (appropriate amount).
Eating 1 stem of komatsuna (50 grams) a day is effective. It is important to eat every day continuously because nutrition doesn’t remain in the body. It is good to eat other kinds of cruciferous vegetables not to become tired of eating them.

One of the major causes of cancer is active oxygen which oxidizes the normal cells, transforming them into cancer cells. The substance that suppresses the occurrence of active oxygen is beta-carotene which is rich in carrots.
But there is another substance which suppresses the occurrence of active oxygen more than 2 times of beta-carotene. That is beta-cryptoxanthin. In the people who took a lot of beta cryptoxanthin, the ratio that lung cancer and cervical cancer occur decreased by 60 % and esophageal cancer decreased by 80 %. Citrus Unshu in Japan which is the same species (mandarin orange) and similar to clementine coantains 60 times more beta-cryptoxanthin than orange. Eating 1 to 2 citrus Unshu is good to prevent cancer. The thick outside skin contains a lot of beta-cryptoxanthin which suppresses active oxygen and is also rich in limonene which suppresses carcinogenic substance. The skin is good to eat drying it. The skin is used as Chinese herbs. It is recommended to eat one teaspoon a day adding it to tea, yogurt or soup.
How to make dried mandarin peels:
1. Soak the peels in about 80 degrees C (176 degrees F) water for 3 minutes to sterilize.
2. Wash the peels and wipe off the water with paper towels.
3. Dry the peels in the sun until they become crisp.
4. Break the peels into pieces.
