How to improve pain in the sole of the foot

​Pain in the sole of the foot usually doesn’t improve easily. If you see a doctor, you’ll likely be told to change your shoes or insoles, and in severe cases, you may get a very painful injection into the sole—which often doesn’t help much.

However, it’s also possible that the cause is simply stiffness somewhere in your body. Today, I’d like to introduce some self-care techniques you should try first if your foot sole hurts. These are methods I use in my clinic and assign as homework for patients.

If you have pain in the sole of your foot, use the tips of both thumbs to separate the calf muscles from the bone between your knee and ankle. This can be quite painful for people with foot pain, but after doing it several times, the discomfort should decrease along with the pain in your foot.
