If you are parched when you wake up, you may not be able to live long.
A human being is constructed to breathe through the nose. When you are parched when you wake up, you don’t breathe through the nose but breathe through the mouth. If this situation continues for a long time, the immune system becomes weaker. The nose is a part of respiratory system so when dust or germs comes in, the nose filters them out to let only clean air pass through. The mouth is a part of digestion system so there is no filter. The dust and germs go into the lungs directly.
In a survey, they asked over 65 years old people whether or not they usually felt thirsty and 70 % of them answered Yes. They asked over 80 years old people the same question and only 30 % of them answered Yes. That means 40 % possibly dropped out between 65 and 80 years old because they were breathing through the mouth and their immune system was not strong. It is important to try to breathe through the mouth.
The method to prevent mouth breathing during sleep is Mouth Tape (Fig. 1).
When you go to bed, putting commercially available surgical tape on the mouth vertically prevents dangerous mouth breathing which lowers your immune strength. The tape doesn’t close your mouth completely because you can still speak with the tape on, but it reduces mouth breathing.
It is not good to breathe through the mouth not only during sleep but also during the daytime.
How to check if you tend to breathe through the mouth
When you close your mouth, check where the tip of your tongue is located.
If the tip of your tongue is touching the back of the lower teeth, you have high possibility to breathe through the mouth (Fig. 2).
The right location of the tip of the tongue is at the back of the upper teeth because when the tip of the tongue is touching the back of the upper teeth, it is difficult to open mouth so you can’t breathe through the mouth (Fig. 3).
How to change dangerous mouth breathing to nose breathing (Fig. 4)
When you breathe through the mouth, the muscles around the mouth are weak. The method to strengthen the muscles is AIUBE Exercise. In an elementary school in Japan, since the children started this exercise, the number of the children who got flu decreased by 90 %.
(1)Open mouth widely making “A shape”.
(2)Pull the lips toward both sides making “I shape”.
(3)Shoot out the lips making “U shape”.
(4)Stick out the tongue making “BE shape”.
You don’t need to make sounds but move the mouth. If you continue this exercise 30 times a day, your mouth breathing improves in about a month. Other effects such as smile lines become thinner or stiffness in neck and shoulder improves are expected.
Eating unsalted almonds as a snack is good to strengthen the immune system because almonds are rich in vitamins such as vitamin B or vitamin E which strengthen the immune system.
