Indications Stiff neck and shoulders, headache and tiredness of eyes Location of GB20 GB20 (Gall Bladder 20) is located at where the spine in the neck runs into the bone behind the ears and is where is dent a little (Fig. 1). Pressing GB20 loosens the tension of the optical nerves and relieves the tiredness of the eye, and also promotes the blood flow of the neck and improves stiff neck and shoulders and headaches. How to press GB20 (1) Cover your head with your palms and place your thumb on GB20 (Fig. 2). (2) Look up slightly and press toward the center of your head for 5 seconds with breathing out (Fig. 3). Doing 5 times for 5 sets is effective to improve stiff neck and shoulders, headache and tiredness of eyes. First, let's check if your spine is distorted. How to check the distortion of your spine (1) Put your heels, buttocks, shoulders and head on the wall without your hands touching the wall (Fig. 0-1). (2) Raise your right leg slowly and keep it for 5 seconds (Fig. 0-2). (3) If you can keep your right leg up, raise your left leg slowly and keep it up for 5 seconds (Fig. 0-3). (4) If you lose the balance when you raise either leg, your spine can be distorted to that side. If you fall to the left when you raise your left, your spine is distorted to the left. If you fall to the right when you raise your right leg, your spine is distorted to the right (Fig. 0-4). Exercise to improve the distortion of the spine - Crawling exercise The points are: (1) Crawl in the opposite direction of your distortion (Fig. 1). When you lift up your left leg, if you fall to the left, you need to crawl clockwise (right-handed), and when you lift up your right leg, if you fall to the right, you need to crawl counterclockwise (left-handed). (2) The size of the circle to crawl Crawl a large circle at the beginning and gradually make the circle smaller because that makes the muscles supporting the spine slowly stretched and the range of motion of the spine wider without strain. Check the distortion of the spine (Thoracic spine) Extend both your arms, put your palms together and check the tips of your fingers (Fig. 1-1 & 1-2). If the tips of the fingers are misaligned, there can be distortion of thoracic spine (Fig. 1-3). Results after 1 week’s trial
Fig. 2 shows the result of 70 years old male. His back became straightened up and the flexibility when he bent forward became better by 13 cm (about 5 inches). Crawling exercise not only fixes the distortion of the lumber spine but also loosens up the tension of the muscles around, improve the range of motion and makes it easier to bend forward. Fig. 3 shows the result of 24 years old female who had had the distortion of the thoracic spine. Her rounded back became straighter and the line between her nose and jaw returned to vertical, which means the distortion of her cervical spine was also improved (Fig. 4). The tip of her fingers fit without misalignment, which means the distortion of her thoracic spine was improved. Other 5 examinees’ postures were improved as well. A patient who usually comes to my clinic for low back pain or menstrual pain came for pain in the shoulder muscle where flu shot had been injected. She had had the flu shot 10 days ago and since then, she was not able to raise her left arm due to pain in the area where flu shot had been injected and she felt tingling sensation in all her left fingers the day before. When I checked the area, there were some tender points on the muscle so that the pain was a side-effect of the injection. After the overall treatment, I relieved the pain on the muscle using an acupuncture point around the neck and asked her to raise her left arm. But she couldn’t, so I checked her shoulder again and found painful points in the shoulder joint. It seemed like the pain in the shoulder was not related to the flu shot, but more like simple shoulder joint problem. So I checked her upper back and found a tight point along the shoulder blade. I asked her to raise her left arm with pressing the tight point. This time she could raise her arm. So I tapped the tightness with my tool to loosen the tightness and asked her to raise her arm again. She could raise her arm. According to her, she has had a shoulder problem every year after a flu shot. Could the flu shot tighten the muscles around the neck, shoulder and upper back? Spurling test and Jackson test, which are the examinations to check if there is cervical nerve root compression which cause neck pain, were positive, so I expected that this case would be hard and take long But against my expectation, after the first treatment, both tests were negative and no pain or tingling sensation with the movements of his neck though tingling sensation happened occasionally. At the fourth treatment, there was no tingling sensation, either. When he came back for check-up in 2 weeks, there was still no pain and tingling sensation so that the course of acupuncture treatments ended. At the first treatment, I used a tool, which gave a little strong vibration by tapping, on the tightness around his neck. From the second treatment, I just used touching needle technique with round-tip tools since the tests for cervical spondylosis were negative, but he got better much faster than I expected. Stiff neck and shoulders happen more in winter.
The major cause of stiff neck and shoulders is the stagnation of blood flow in the trapezius muscle. Th trapezius muscle always support heavy head and arms which weight is 5 Kg each. That is why the trapezius muscle tends to accumulate tiredness, causing the stagnation of blood flow. In winter, there is less chance to sweat and that reduces the metabolism and blood flow becomes poor, causing stiff neck and shoulders. Substance effective to prevent and improve stiff neck and shoulders That is Vitamin E. A fruit contains 3.3 mg/100 g while blueberry contains 1.7 mg/100 g and contains 1.3 mg/100 g. According to an experiment that people whose neck and shoulders are very stiff ate the fruit every day for 10 days, their neck and shoulders became much softer than before eating the fruit. The fruit is Avocado. There are a lot of food which contains vitamin E, but avocado also contains vitamin B1 and B2 which help recover from muscle fatigue. Half of avocado a day is effective to improve stiff neck and shoulders. Avocado also contains oleic acid which smoothens blood flow by reducing cholesterol, so it is effective to prevent hardening of blood vessels and lifestyle-related diseases. Overview
The patient was a woman with the age of 50s. Her complaint was pain in her right neck and shoulder area. When she woke up in the morning she came to the clinic, she couldn’t move her neck very well due to pain. It was difficult to rotate her neck to the right side and when she looked up and down she felt pain below the right side of the back of her neck. She had a lot of painful points with pressure around the area and on the right side of the neck. After the first treatment, she felt easier and less painful to move her neck, but still painful at the end of each movement. The next day she felt better, but there was pain below the right side of the back of her neck at the end of looking up and down and the right rotation. When I checked her neck and shoulder area, the number of pressure pain points were less. After the treatment, she didn’t feel any pain when she moved her neck, so the course of the treatments for her sprained neck ended by 2 treatments. All the treatments were performed with non-insertion needles. She also had a sty on her right eye. Heat therapy (moxa) on her hands helped make the sty smaller. Detail of Acupuncture Treatment [1st Treatment] From her symptom, I assumed that the pattern of her condition would be Spleen Deficiency Liver Excess, but actually the pattern was Liver deficiency judging from the pulse, abdomen and light strokes on the channels. I tonified Left LR-3 and performed Spreading Needle on her neck and head and let her take a rest for 15 minutes. After the rest, I gave general treatment on her back and removed painful points with pressure using points on her head and hand. Having her sit up, I gave a little strong stimulation with Dispersion Needle to the points where she still felt painful when she moved her neck. Her neck didn’t become completely better, but I finished the treatment for her neck for the day, considering the dosage of the treatment. She also had a sty on her right eye, so I did moxa on her LI-4. [2nd Treatment] The pattern of her condition changed to Spleen Deficiency Liver Excess which I had assumed before the 1st treatment. I tonified Right SP-3 and PC-7 with Yang and tonified Left GB-36 with Yin. After 15 minutes rest, I gave her general treatment on her back and had her sit up and removed painful points with pressure around her neck and shoulder using the points on her head. I asked her to check her neck and she still had tightness and pain at the end of the movements. After I used Right TW-3, She felt looser but still had pain at the end of the movements around Right SI-15. After I used Dispersion Needle on the point, the pain was gone. The sty on her right eye already became small, but I added moxa on LI-4 again. Consideration The pattern in the first treatment used for the root treatment might be more for sty in the eye. Spleen Deficiency Liver Excess used for the second treatment must fit sprained neck. I think Spreading Needle on the back of her head which I skipped in the first treatment helped releasing the pain and tightness on the diseased area. I also think the good point to treat often shows up around SI-15 in the case of sprained neck.

That is caused by the weight of the head. Do you know the weight of our head? It is about 11 pounds (5 kg), which is as heavy as a ball of bowling. The muscles around the shoulder is pulled by the weight of the head, causing stiffness in the neck and shoulders. Exercise for Stiffness in neck and shoulders (1) Pinch the cloth at the shoulder with one hand (Fig.1). (2) Rotate your shoulder widely from front to back and from back to front (Fig. 2). Since this exercise moves the shoulder blade widely, it is effective to loosen the muscles around the shoulder blade. If you have kept the same posture for more than 30 minutes, it is good to do this exercise a few times to prevent the stiffness in the neck and shoulders. |
